Background
The City of Malibu owns five community lands totaling over 61 acres. To ensure the future of these community lands aligns with the community’s priorities, the City completed a comprehensive outreach and engagement program from March through September 2024 to gather feedback on what the community envisions for the future of each land.
The Council’s actions at its October 28, 2024 meeting aim to bring new amenities that will enrich the lives of residents of all ages, including sports fields, a multigenerational sports complex and a conceptual plan for a future performing arts center.
Project Updates
Based on the input received throughout the program, the City Council authorized staff to begin a phased approach for developing the lands, prioritizing community needs. The approved next steps include:
- Heathercliff and Ioki (Chili Cook-Off Lot) Lots: The City will explore options for new soccer, baseball and softball fields as well as a multigenerational community center, including a pool, gymnasium, senior center and expanded library services.
- La Paz Lot: Over the next few months, the Malibu Arts Commission will continue evaluating the concept and design of the La Paz Performing Arts Center. On Tuesday, April 22, the Malibu Arts Commission re-affirmed Vice Chair Peter Jones and Commissioner Lotte Cherin to the Parcel C (La Paz) Performing Arts Center Ad Hoc Committee, tasked with gathering community ideas.
- As part of this robust community engagement effort, the community is encouraged to join the next Malibu Arts Commission meeting on Tuesday, May 27 at 9:30 AM at Malibu City Hall to learn more.
- Triangle and Trancas lots: The Council has not set direction for these lands at this time.
